It is some time claimed that lock had two main arguments for religious toleration: the true belief argument that true religious belief cannot be acquired through coercion, and the universalization argument that the principle of religious intolerance in favor of the true religion would not be desirable if it were universally interpreted and applied by fallible and often biased human beings.
